I, Srijana Sapkota, am currently pursuing a master’s in Environmental Science under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Lide Chen, with expected completion in May 2024. My research revolves around nutrient recycling from dairy wastewater, specifically focusing on the optimization of ammonia nitrogen removal and recovery from raw liquid dairy manure using the vacuum thermal stripping process. The primary focus of this study is the vacuum thermal stripping and acid absorption process for NH₃-N from raw dairy manure, followed by modeling and optimization using the response surface methodology (RSM). With the specified parameters set at temperature 69.9°C, pH 10.5, vacuum pressure 53.5 Kpa, and treatment time 64.2 min, the NH₃-N removal efficiency attained was 98.58 ±1.05%, aligning closely with the specified model prediction. These findings contribute valuable insights into the practical implementation of vacuum thermal stripping process for treating raw dairy manure, particularly in large-scale operational ccontext.

In pursuit of my career goal, I envision actively engaging in research, development, and implementation of nitrogen removal strategies. My aim is to not only address the environmental concerns associated with nitrogen in wastewater but also to contribute to the overall improvement of dairy industry practices. Beyond my academic pursuits, my passion for waste management extends to a broader context. I envision expanding my horizons and contributing to initiatives that promote healthy, resilient, and sustainable communities in my native Nepal. Nepal's diverse topographical features make it highly susceptible to a range of natural disasters. Drawing inspiration from the aftermath of the 2015 Nepal earthquake, which generated 3.9 million tons of earthquake debris containing hazardous material, I am motivated to develop comprehensive waste management strategies to address the unique challenges posed by Nepal's susceptibility to multi-hazard destruction and contribute to building a resilient and sustainable future for the country.
