My name is Dan Scoresby, and I am a master’s student studying Animal Science. I am a based in the Twin Falls Research and Extension Center, in Twin Falls, Idaho. Dr. Mireille Chahine, the University of Idaho Dairy Extension Specialist, is my major professor. She obtained her Ph. D. from the University of Minnesota and has been working in her current role for more than twenty years. The project we have put together is comparing the manure characteristics, nutrient and nitrogen excretions, nitrogen utilization efficiency, energy corrected milk production, and feed efficiency of lactating Jersey and Holstein cows. The effect of breed on these variables is not known, and we will look to answer that question. The animals are housed in the same barn, which enables us to have consistent management practices for both breeds including ration composition and delivery, pen cleaning, and milking schedules. Upon graduation, I hope to take the knowledge and skills that

I have obtained from this program and pair them with those I have learned from my bachelor’s degree in Agribusiness Management and prior work experience in the agricultural sector. My goal is to work in the dairy industry as a dairy consultant and nutritionist. Working and helping dairy producers maximize their efficiency and profit while minimizing the environmental impact and cost of production is where I feel like I can be most effective. I have always loved cows and want to take that passion to help producers have the healthiest cows and optimized production efficiencies. The experiences I have gained from this program, when joined with my bachelor’s degree and prior work experience, will allow me to best service the dairy producers in Idaho and the surrounding area in my chosen role.
