OUR TEAM Yuxuan Zheng
M.S. Applied Economics
My name is Yuxuan Zheng, a masters student of Applied Economics. My research is centered on the “Spatial Cropland Distribution for Optimal Dairy Manure Management in Idaho” under the guidance of Professor Patrick Hatzenbuehler. This project is particularly significant in the backdrop of Idaho’s booming dairy industry, as it seeks to unravel the economic and environmental implications of the industry's growth. My role involves a comprehensive analysis of “optimal” spatial distribution of dairies and cropland in Idaho regarding the ability for dairies to best distribute their manure nutrients for uptake by crops at state and county level. The project aims to provide the economic implications of adjusting dairy and cropland locations to align with the "optimal" model and explores the feasibility of such redistributions.
This immersive research experience in the dairy industry of Idaho
has significantly deepened my understanding of agricultural economics, particularly in the context of sustainable development. It has highlighted the intricate balance required between economic growth and environmental sustainability, especially in the rapidly evolving agricultural sector. As a result, my career aspirations have evolved towards a more nuanced and practical approach. I am now keenly interested in pursuing a role where I can apply this enhanced understanding, perhaps as an analyst or consultant in agricultural economics. My aim is to contribute to developing strategies that help farmers and industry stakeholders navigate the challenges of modern agriculture while promoting sustainability. This project has not only equipped me with valuable skills but also instilled a sense of responsibility towards contributing to more sustainable agricultural practices.
